The Big Y test at Family Tree DNA identifies SNP’s in the Y-DNA that are passed down from Father to Son. Two people that both have the same SNP means they both have a common ancestor who passed the SNP down to each of them through their paternal line. Processing the results through YFull helps to better organize the data into a useful format enabling us to better find common SNPs as well as perpetually updating the sites YTree, reflecting newly found SNPs in a hierarchical structure. So far we have 8 Big Y participants for Morrison Q – one still waiting for results from Family Tree DNA – two still needing to be processed through YFull.

Some observations and comments:

Below is the Q-Males Big Y chart for Morrison-Q. A link to the most recent updated version can always be found under the “Y-DNA (Members Only)” section in the right column of our WEB page – “Q-Males BigY” link. You must first be logged in to access this link. (see FAQ Link for explanation)

The red numbers signify the terminal SNP of each participant (currently R-FGC5577 for all in Morrison-Q). This is the most recent SNP passed down through a long line of SNPs in the patriarchal line. DF41 was our recognized terminal SNP – but since we identified DF41 in our line several years ago – five more newer SNPs have been found (through the BigY test), the most recent has been identified as R-FGC5577. See the tree below – the red asterisks show the direct line back to R-CTS2501 (DF41).

The green numbers are SNPs as well, but are called Novel Variants because they are at present only found in one individual. Once they are also found in another person they are no longer considered Novel Variants. YFull puts each in a category according to how reliable the data is. The categories are: Best – Acceptable – Ambiguous – Low. We only show the first two categories in our chart. Each Novel Variant listed per participant either first appeared in that participant or anywhere along that participants paternal ancestral line from Patriarch James Morrison (but not including him) down to the participant.

The purple numbers signify when two people match, having the same Novel Variant. Before our most recent participant received his report from YFull, there was only one participant who represented the line of William – Tom Akers (Q57). His results showed he had four Novel Variants. When James Morrison (Q4) results came in he had four Novel Variants as well. Between the two of them – three of their Novel Variants matched – now signified in purple. Sometime in the near future we should see these reflected as a new Terminal SNP for them – which will also be added to the YTree. (We are still waiting for the YFull results for William Morrison – Q49)

The brown number records how many reads for that SNP were found

The Purple Bar shows each of the four Immigrant Brother lines as well as those who do not yet know how they fit into our tree.

The Yellow Bar signifies each time there is a branch in our tree with a new SNP showing. R-FCG5577 is the SNP that is tied to all in Morrison-Q. It first occurred in our Patriarch James Morrison (father of the four brothers) or sometime before, through one of his paternal line ancestors. We also show a SNP branching off within the line of William – this either occurred first in William himself or in his 3rd Son Andrew. When we are able to test someone in the line of Patrick (Andrew’s Brother) that individual will either have one or more of the purple SNPs or they will not. If they do have the SNPs – that would mean the SNPs originated in William – passing down to both Andrew and Patrick. If they don’t have the SNPs – that would mean the SNPs originated in Andrew.

In the YFull YTree below – you can see our direct SNP line highlighted with red asterisks. This is just the most recent of a very long line of SNPs going back to “Adam”

TMRCA = The most recent common ancestor

YBP = Years before present. This number is always being revised as more data is collected. It’s all based on statistics. Currently they have R-FGC5577 starting about 350 years ago, which is about right when you consider Patriarch James Morrison was born around 1675.

With only eight participants so far involved – we are seeing some good results. I trust as we continue testing participants representing down to the forth generation of Q-Males – we will see some more branches discovered. For every green novel variant in our chart – we are looking for others with that variant as well – thus helping to determine through which ancestor that SNP originated – using deductions based on who has and does not have those SNPs in their Y-DNA.

These results will help in several ways:

Confirm what we already show with our paper trail

Help to correct branches that conflict in the paper trail

Identify new branches we never knew existed

I hope this report has been helpful and not too confusing. We are all delving into a new frontier – there is so much potential, sometimes I feel like I am drinking from a fire hose. We need to keep reminding ourselves to take it one step at a time – and enjoy the ride together…

Click on chart to enlarge

Click on chart to enlarge

Having another Big Y test result processed through YFull – I thought it would be good to spend some time discussing our results so far to date.
