He was delivered by Dr. Tom Gordon, a kinsman. The first six months of his life, the family lived on the grounds of the school where his father and mother taught near Tolar, Texas. In early summer of 1935, the family moved to Beaumont, Texas.

John attended South Park Public Schools in Beaumont, graduating from the high school in 1952. His was a normal childhood for the time, much of it spent outdoors roller skating, riding bicycles, playing corner lot baseball and football, cowboys and Indians, American soldiers vs the Japanese, marbles, tops, yo-yos, and the rest of the crazes as they came to and went from the school grounds.

John attended Lamar State College of Technology, graduating in 1956 with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. That summer he went to work in Ft. Worth, Texas, as an Associate Engineer. He helped develop a high performance military aircraft, the B-58, working in flight test as an instrumentation engineer.

On December 26, 1956, he married Sue Ellen Davis, a marriage that has thriven for almost 60 years at this writing. They have three children:

Reida Susan, who married Donald York

Sarah Darlene, who married Mark Deaton

John Andrew III, who married Kathy Horner

Since 1961, they have lived in and near Kansas City, Missouri. They moved in pursuit of his mechanical engineering career, which lasted almost a third of a century in Kansas City working for the Bendix/Allied /Allied-Signal Corporation until his retirement in 1995. John retired as division Vice-President for Operations.

John and Sue have been fortunate in many ways. They have enjoyed a long life together, always near their three children, seven grandchildren and two g grandchildren. After a lifetime of work (John) and child rearing at home (Sue), they have learned to live in close proximity and continued love and friendship through 21 years of retirement. They have traveled together, played sports together, worked around the house and in it, and through it all remain friends.

John has had a busy retirement. He has studied Spanish in residence in Mexico, spent many hours studying both his and Sue’s genealogy, taken many trips to Mexico, and a few to Europe, spent a great deal of time with his children and grandchildren and suffered with them the trials and tribulations of child-rearing, school, and becoming a part of the workaday world. John is a student of history and an inveterate reader, especially novels. He is a sports fan, and watches baseball both at home and at the stadium, and has followed his son and grandson’s sports teams, tennis, cross-country, golf, and basketball closely. He loves to garden, especially flowering plants and shrubs.

Having attained more than 80 years, he is thankful to have retained reasonably good health, both of body and mind for so many years. More than anything, he is grateful to a loving God for his family.

These are our wedding clothes, but the picture was taken a couple of months later.
